Governor’s Schools are state-funded, residential programs for gifted and talented high school students held during the summer in most of the southern states in the U.S. All of these programs include substantial interdisciplinary components in addition to their disciplinary studies
.
In 1976, I had the priviledge of attending the Governor’s Honors Program to study theatre. As a boy who had grown up on a farm in rural Georgia, I discovered for the first time that it was okay–even cool–to be artistic and intellectual. I was changed for the better and forever.
Two years later, I returned to the program as a Resident Assistant in an effort to begin to repay this incomparable and invaluable experience. Since then, I spent 25 summers at Governor’s Schools in Georgia, Virginia, and Missouri.
Unfortunately, due to state budget cuts, most governor’s schools now have been reduced or eliminated.
